RATIONED RECIPES COOKBOOK
Rationed Recipes is more than a cookbook, it's an immersive exploration of Polish cuisine and history under communism. Inspired by 1970s Polish food newspapers, it showcases traditional dishes while tracing the evolution of rationing and the broader political landscape from the post World War II era to the late 1980s, including the Solidarity movement. The book is structured around Kartki, the ration cards that dictated what families could eat, highlighting resilience and creativity in the face of scarcity.
The design balances brutalist layouts with precise typography and a monochrome palette, punctuated by selective pops of colour in stamps and numbers. The physical book features a translucent vellum cover, allowing Polish translations and underlying details to peek through, creating a layered, tactile experience. Each spread maintains historical accuracy while remaining visually clear, turning recipes and archival context into a cohesive, immersive experience that is both authentic and striking.
