Project Collection

The goal of this project was to create a full LP (vinyl record) design inspired by a randomly assigned music genre. This included designing a front cover that visually reflects the genre’s identity, coming up with a fictional band name and album title, and crafting a song list that fits within the world of the music. A physical mockup was also required to showcase how the design would appear as a real, tangible object.

My assigned genre was Latin American music, which opened up a wide range of inspiration rooted in rhythm, storytelling, heritage, and vibrant visual culture. The challenge was to reflect that richness through an authentic and cohesive design that felt both personal and culturally grounded.

My assigned genre was Latin American music, which opened up a wide range of inspiration rooted in rhythm, storytelling, heritage, and vibrant visual culture. The challenge was to reflect that richness through an authentic and cohesive design that felt both personal and culturally grounded.

For my take on Latin American music, I approached the design with a traditional, handcrafted aesthetic using pencil crayon and watercolor on 30” x 15” multimedia paper. These materials allowed for a textured, organic look that feels both vibrant and intimate. After completing the illustration by hand, I scanned the artwork and enhanced it in Photoshop—adjusting brightness and saturation to bring out the warmth and vitality of the original piece.

The fictional band, Los Artrópodos (The Arthropods), draws inspiration from the cultural symbolism of insects in Latin America—creatures often associated with transformation, endurance, and spiritual continuity. This symbolism informed not only the band’s name, but also the central image on the cover: a beetle, representing the idea of personal and cultural metamorphosis.

The title Orígenes (Origins) is featured prominently on the beetle’s back, using custom lettering that mimics paint or spray-paint techniques—blurring the line between natural form and human expression. The band name Los Artrópodos is hand rendered style font in an arched style above the beetle, giving the appearance of being painted or brushed directly onto the surface. This decision was intentional, reflecting the tactile, expressive quality of folk signage and mural art often seen in Latin America.

On the back cover, the same leaf pattern background is used at a lower opacity to create visual continuity while allowing the tracklist to stand out. The word Orígenes appears again, used as a clipping mask that ties back to the front design and reinforces the album’s core theme. The tracklist is divided into Side A and Side B, both labeled using hand-drawn-style fonts to maintain the homegrown, artisanal feel.

This project was a celebration of tradition, nature, and cultural identity—all brought together through expressive, handcrafted visual design.
